Music in Therapy Group

He took his pain and turned it into something beautiful. Into something that people connect to. And that’s what good music does. It speaks to you. It changes you.
-Hannah Harrington, Saving June

Did you know that music has the power to influence the mind, body, and spirit? Since the beginning of time music has influenced the way people think, feel, and behave. Today, we know that music has therapeutic qualities that, as an adjunct to traditional counseling, may lead toward elevated levels of life satisfaction.

This is why counseling speaks is now offering two new FREE music therapy groups to help with grief and loss and substance abuse. To find out how music may have a positive impact on your life, we encourage you to attend.

Lead by Princess Gabor, MA, LPC, NCC, participants will learn about the healing powers of music and have multiple opportunities to share their own music and discuss how it impacts their lives.

Survivors of Violent Crimes Group

The impact of trauma from violent crimes resonates differently with everyone. For some, this impact leads toward fear, anxiety, depression, and loss of self. For others, it leads toward anger, frustration, and resentment. Failure to attend to these negative symptoms, among others, may make it difficult to get back a part of life that has been taken away. Through therapy, you can take that part back and begin living your life once again.

counseling speaks welcomes you to our FREE “Survivors of Violent Crimes” group.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their traumatic experience in a safe, caring environment. In addition to group discussion, each session will focus on coping skills and wellness strategies to assist in recovery.

Work-life Balance Group

The idea of work-life balance can mean something completely different to everyone. For some, it may mean being able to sign off and disconnect and leave work at work, for others this may mean having the flexibility to pick up your children from school, finish a work project at home, or take the vacation time you have been wanting to travel. Balance may look different for you at different points in your life, when you are single may be different when you marry, or if you have children, as well as when you start a new career versus when you are nearing retirement. It is no wonder more than one in four Americans report being “super stressed” since there is the constant need to juggle heavy workloads, while managing relationships and family responsibilities and somehow trying to squeeze in our outside interests.

Are you ready to join us to learn ways to alleviate your stress and effectively manage your time? We at counselingspeaks are offering a free 6-week psychoeducation group that offers strategies and techniques that will equip you with better ways to navigate out everyday work life demands.

Topics include: workplace culture, values, scheduling and making the most of your time, physical balance and emotional regulation, mindfulness, and self-care.

Live the life you deserve: one of fulfillment, happiness, and satisfaction!

SMART Recovery at Counseling Speaks

Counseling Speaks is excited to announce a new time for our SMART Recovery meeting! SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) Recovery is a mutual-support group for behavioral and substance addictions. SMART meetings provide a judgement-free space for people to discuss their addictions with peers. SMART believes that individuals have the power to create change in their own lives, and the program is designed to empower participants to make the most beneficial changes.

SMART is based on a four-point program:

1) build and maintain motivation;

2) cope with urges.

3) manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

4) live a balanced life.

Meeting topics support these four points and can range from disputing irrational beliefs to setting realistic goals for behavior change. All tools used in SMART meetings and in the SMART handbook are developed from evidenced-based addictions research.

The meetings are always free, although you may make donations to support SMART Recovery’s main office.

SMART Recovery Meeting Information:

Open Meeting for Anyone

When: Friday 6-7:30pm

Where: 155 N. Michigan Ave. #355

Cost: Free.

The facilitator will supply all handouts and readings, so it is not necessary to purchase a handbook.
